22 arrests in immigration operation - 14-06-2007
Twenty-two arrests have been made during the largest ever immigration operation in Humberside which has already seen twenty illegal immigrants returned to Brazil.

The operation concluded when immigration officers and police arrested a Brazilian immigration offender at a poultry processing company in Scunthorpe. Immigration officers had previously targeted nineteen residential addresses in Scunthorpe as part of the same operation.
All of the offenders - twenty-one Brazilian nationals and one Georgian - were working illegally at the poultry processing company. 2 Sisters Food Group Ltd raised concerns with the authorities over the use of suspicious documents and it has worked closely alongside the Border and Immigration Agency throughout this operation.

Chris Hudson, Regional Director for the Border and Immigration Agency for the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, said:

"Border and Immigration Agency staff are working hard to tackle illegal working all around the region. To combat illegal immigration it is not enough to stop illegal journeys. We also have to close down the illegal jobs that tempt people to come to Britain.

"Employers have a key role in tackling this problem and I want to commend 2 Sisters Food Group Ltd for their vigilance in spotting suspicious documents, their commitment to complying with the rules, and for their cooperation with us throughout. This operation is a good example of what can be achieved when employers work with us."

A spokesman for 2 Sisters Food Group said:

"2 Sisters Food Group believes that industry, has a role to play in monitoring the legitimacy of workers to assist the UK authorities. We take our responsibilities as an employer very seriously and we are committed to fair employment for workers across our sites."
