Bad employment law must be scrapped in Jersey - 25-06-2007
Employment law in Jersey must be changed radically to come into line with international obligations after a victory by the T&G section of Unite – the Union at a hearing of the International Labour Organisation.

The ILO has recommended that Jersey’s employment law seriously breaches ILO conventions and called for serious discussions with employers and the T&G section of Unite to review the employment legislation that was passed by the States of Jersey in May 2005 and is due to become law later this year.

Andy Frampton, regional secretary of Unite’s T&G south and west region, has been leading the campaign against the legislation. He said: “The ILO decision confirms what the T&G has been saying about this legislation since it was produced. Ministers must consider their positions seriously, as they have misled the States of Jersey by claiming that all aspects of the legislation complied with ILO conventions.

“There is now has an opportunity to sit down and re-negotiate this legislation so that we can truly have fair play in the workplace.

“The T&G Section of Unite has called an emergency meeting of our Jersey District Committee for today where we will have a full report view of the ILO decision. Our shop stewards and activists will discuss how to carry forward our campaign to establish fair employment law in Jersey.”
