Olympics to be hit by skills shortage - 21-02-2005
As the International Olymic Committee finish their vist to London People 1st, the sector skills council representing the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism industries, has announced that 60% of businesses will have to recruit extra skilled workers to cope with hosting the major sporting event.

The availablity and quality of training when it is available was blamed for the expected shortage. Three quarters of the employers surveyed said that the government should do more to ensure that employers knew about the training that is avaiable and a similar number said that the quality of the training needed to be improved.

Regardless of the number of volunteers involved in running the actual Olympic events the event as a whole will suffer if there are not enough companies with enough skilled employees to provide teh services the expected influx of thousands of extra vistors will demand.

Nevertheless the vast majority of businesses believed that the Games would be good for London their own businesses.

There are seven years to go before the Games which according to People 1st, is suffient time to build the skills capability, but the work needs to start now.

Regardless of whether London wins the Games for 2012 teh hospitality sector is expected to grow, but the skills issue needs to be addressed if the industry is to reach its full potential
